CHAPTER SEVEN

WHEN the knock came on the barn door, Claire ignored it, absorbed by the painting in front of her. If it was Declan, she didn’t want to see him, let alone speak to him. Perhaps it was Brett? Well, she was cross with him, too. She felt as though her brother had betrayed her by confiding in Declan. She knew it was stupid but she couldn’t help it. If Brett was having trouble coping with things, why hadn’t he talked to her about them? She’d always been there for him. Surely he trusted her?

‘Claire?’

It was Mary. Sighing, Claire put her brush down and walked to the door. She opened it and went straight back to her easel, not saying a word to her sister. Regarding the painting before her, she decided the brown wasn’t exactly the right shade and mixed some more paint on her palette.

‘I guess that means I can come in.’ Mary paused but Claire didn’t respond. ‘Or I could go away if you prefer.’

Still no answer.

‘Or I could just come in and talk to you and drive you so insane with my inane chatter that you’ll stop shutting yourself off and talk to me.’ Mary came in, closing the door behind her. She crossed to stand behind Claire and looked thoughtfully at what her sister was painting.

‘Well, if a picture doesn’t paint a thousand words, I don’t know what does.’

‘Meaning?’ Claire regarded her picture critically. It was something she’d been working on for a few weeks. A man and a woman sat at a table at an outdoor café, the woman looking away, the man imploring.

‘That guy looks just like Declan.’

Claire’s eyes widened in horror and she stepped back, bumping into Mary, to get a better look at her artwork. ‘No, he doesn’t.’ But even as she spoke, she realised the product of her subconscious at work.

‘Oh, give it up, Claire. You’re obviously hung up on the guy.’

‘How can I possibly be hung up on him when I hardly know him?’

‘It is possible. Believe me. That’s how I felt with Greg. He came into my life in such a rush and I’ve never regretted getting swept up in the wave of passion and desire.’

‘That was you. You were always the impulsive one.’

Mary shrugged. ‘So what’s the deal with Declan?’

Claire put her brush down and sighed. ‘I don’t know.’

‘Has he kissed you?’

Claire couldn’t meet her sister’s gaze and instead shuffled around, capping tubes of paint and cleaning her brushes.

Mary chuckled. ‘I’ll take that as a yes. So what’s the problem? You didn’t like it?’

Claire put her brushes down and finally turned to look at her sister, despair on her face. ‘I don’t know, Mary.’

‘Either you did or you didn’t, hon.’

‘Of course I did and I want him to kiss me again, but the man makes me so mad. Do you know he’s taken Brett out for a game of golf?’

‘Elizabeth told me.’

‘What?’ She was stunned and hurt. ‘Did everyone know except me?’

Mary frowned. ‘I’m not sure what’s wrong.
